A conversation is the thread of messages between your sub-account and one contact. GoHighLevel puts every channel in the same thread: SMS, email, phone calls and voicemails, web chat, Facebook and Instagram messages, WhatsApp and others the sub-account has connected. The Conversations tab is the inbox view of all those threads, and the same history shows on the contact's record.
Every conversation and every message has its own ID in the API, separate from the contact ID.
In practice
Reps work from Conversations day to day: filter to unread or assigned threads, reply in whichever channel the contact used, and see past calls with their recordings in line. Each message carries a direction (inbound or outbound), a channel, a timestamp and a status.
The weak spot is getting history out. HighLevel's contact export is about contact records, not the messages. There's no native one-click export of every SMS and email in a sub-account for a date range, which agencies need for audits, compliance requests, client offboarding and reporting. Answering "who replied to this blast?" is also hard natively, because a reply could arrive by text, call, email or chat.
Where it shows up in RGS Tools
Conversation Exporter's SMS and email export pulls message history to CSV with direction, contact, conversation and message IDs on every row, for any date range with no row caps. Blast Follow-Up' no-reply checker reads each contact's real history across texts, calls, emails and chats. Backup & Insights's file backup includes conversation attachments.
